New Delhi, March 9 (IANS) Jon Landau, co-producer of 3-D sci-fi epic ‘Avatar’ that won three Oscars including one for visual effects, has praised Lowry Digital, a subsidiary of Reliance Media Works Ltd, for enhancing live-action scenes in the film for the golden gong.

‘Lowry Digital’s innovative digital image processing helped us create the wholly immersive world that Jim (director James Cameron also co-producer of the movie) imagined. We brought Lowry in to clean up and enhance live-action scenes where necessary, allowing us to present 3-D images with unprecedented quality,’ Landau, COO at Cameron’s Light storm Entertainment and producer of ‘Avatar’, said in a statement.

‘Avatar’, the most successful film in history with more than $2 billion in ticket sales, bagged golden statuettes for art direction and cinematography apart from visual effects.

Cameron and Landau asked Lowry Digital to adapt and apply new image processing techniques than existing under tough time constraints for ‘Avatar’. With very little time at hand, the company established a special 24×7 pipeline of data technicians and image processing experts and worked non-stop through the final two months of the movie.

‘To achieve the truly immersive experience Jim desired for ‘Avatar’, the picture quality bar was set extremely high. But that’s only half the story. In addition to the challenging quality goal, there were so many pixels to process and so little time,’ said Lowry Digital Executive Vice President Mike Inchalik.

Added Anil Arjun, CEO of Reliance Media Works: ‘We are thrilled that Lowry Digital was selected by a true Hollywood visionary like James Cameron for this landmark 3-D film and the success of this creative combination can be witnessed through Avatar’s winning of technical accolades at the Oscars.’

Based in Burbank, California, Lowry Digital is a post-production unit that utilises proprietary image processing science to deliver superior picture elements for a wide range of content owners and producers.

Before ‘Avatar’, Cameron collaborated with the company for his projects including ‘Aliens of the Deep’, ‘Last Mysteries of the Titanic’ and the high-definition home video releases of ‘Terminator’, ‘Aliens’ and ‘True Lies’.

Lowry Digital’s other credits include digital image enhancement of movies like ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ and ‘Zodiac’.

The red carpet was thought to go green for the 82nd annual Academy Awards last night, but instead it was all about “Avatar” blue. Mo’Nique renowned her Oscar moment in the invincible hue, tiring a jolt of cobalt with a Billie Holiday up-do. Maggie Gyllenhaal also stayed within the blue story line. She fruitfully pulled off a print by Dries van Noten — not an easy feat in the gown stakes.But the starring role in blue was occupied by Nicole Richie, who wore a sensation of a beaded gown with bell sleeves that fit her like a glove.

Zoe Saldana, the star of “Avatar,” strayed unluckily from the Na’vi look.She chosen a split-decision dress. It was stylish enough — pink, sparkly, strapless on top. But the skirt looked like her feet were exhausted an assortment of purple plushy toys.Anna Kendrick, the young star of “Up in the Air,” went typical retro glamour in a blush-pink, off-the-shoulder goddess gown. Gorgeous was Demi Moore, looking nearly bare in a salmon-pink corset finishing in a cascade of ruffles. Another pink lady, Charlize Theron, who made fashion history a pair of years ago in a garbage-bag-green creation, this year opted for a strapless dress with two huge rosettes on the chest. As for the less successful sartorial adventures, there were a few.

Sarah Jessica Parker, who loves to push the envelope, chose a Chanel Haute Couture dress with a strange silver sculpture in ribbon on the front that looked like a nightie.

Lovely Vera Fermiga looked fan-tastic — not in a good way — in a swirly, pleated number in lipstick red by Marchesa that screamed lampshade.
Since Sandra Bullock is reportedly one of the most influential stars in her red-carpet choices, she might have selected more carefully. The “Blind Side” star took more of a risk in a gold, panne, velvet dress with silver-leaf detail on the bodice that sadly resembled a skating costume – or a Christmas adornment.

She was the stunning showstopper for the very first show of Lakmé Fashion Week at Grand Hyatt on Friday.Indian actress Mugdha Godsewalks the runway with fashion designer Pria Kataaria Puri. Designer Riyaz Ganji of the label Libas decided to stick to a resort theme for his LFW collection — crisp linens for men and sparkling eveningwear for women. And he roped in Pooja Bedi to do the showstopping honours. Sabyasachi Mukherjee too showcased his collection without roping in any showstopper but of course vidya balan was present in the first row to witness the collection. And cheer him.

Fashion Week Banned To Lindsay Lohan

New York (ANI): Actress Lindsay Lohan was allegedly banned from Jill Stuart’s Fashion Week show because the designer’s team considers her a ‘brand damager.’ “A lot of designers, and particularly Jill’s camp, don’t think she’s worth all the press she’d get their show,” the New York Daily News quoted an industry insider as saying.
Though, Stuart has deprived of that she banned the ‘Mean Girls’ star. The source also mentioned Lohan’s ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson and her sister, fashion designer Charlotte, as potential reasons for Lohans nonattendance. “Fashion Week kind of belongs to the Ronsons and Charlotte had Lindsay banned from both her show and after-party just like she did this past fall,” the source added.

Project Runway designers usually show at Bryant Park and then fall off the map and into the black hole that is the world of fashion. If the designs from today’s show is any indication, it looks like season 7’s designers will be in the same boat. While some of the pieces are borderline decent, they also look border costume.

The styling leaves a lot to be desired, and it seems that this season’s guest judge will be Faith Hill. Hey! She’s worn designer clothing before, she just must know a thing or two about fashion, no?

Bollywood hottest actress Priyanka Chopra won her first National Award for her act in Madhur Bhandarkar’s seriously applauded film Fashion.

Director Madhur Bhandarkar, who has previously bagged two National awards prior for his films Page 3 and Traffic Signal, said he was pleased that his work was being appreciated.

Prada shortens temporary layoffs as orders rise

MILAN (Reuters Life!) – Italian fashion house Prada is shortening temporary suspensions for some workers by three weeks after orders for its spring/summer 2010 clothes exceeded expectations by 10 percent.

The Milan fashion group, whose designer Miuccia Prada is seen as a trailblazer worldwide for fashion, had signed an agreement with union workers a few weeks ago to put 250 from a plant of 3,000 into “cassa integrazione,” according to newspaper reports.

The scheme allows Italians in large industrial firms to be sent home temporarily on reduced pay. The temporary, rotational measure was to last between four and six weeks, union members were quoted saying in the reports.

Prada said in a statement the workers at the Valdarno plant in Tuscany began returning to work on Monday.

“The company is extremely pleased to identify the first signs of the market’s recovery that allow it to schedule a speedy return to full production,” it said in the statement.

This contrasts with news from fellow Milan fashion house Versace, which said this week it was cutting about a quarter of its global workforce and expects to post a loss this year as the crisis hit demand for luxury goods.
